PC1: Picture Smart and Optical Character Recognition Software:
Resolve the Visual Barriers of the Students with Visual Impairments in Educational Accessibility
Presented by:
Rachelle Buenaventura, Graduate Faculty Assistant
at Old Dominion University
Session Description:
Persons with visual impairments cannot identify the visual characteristics and figures of a photo in the computer and mobile phones. They wouldn’t be able to know the faces, background and actions taken on the camera. They wouldn’t be able to imagine the colors and appreciate the structure presented on websites. They wouldn’t be able to read the scanned files and screenshots given in class. Through the advanced features of the screen readers, they can now get access to these items digitally. Picture Smart and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software will break and resolve these visual problems so that they will get the equal access and opportunity to grasp the printed materials and the digital platforms. Moreover, they would be able to develop independence, social participation, and educational success.
