About Our Panelists
 

Robert Beach, Assistive Technology Specialist - KCKCC

Robert is a blind professional in the field of assistive technology and disability services in higher education. He holds a master’s in disability services and two assistive technology certificates. He has been the Assistive Technology Specialist at Kansas City Kansas Community College since January 1994. Robert is a member of AHEAD and has served as the president of the Kansas affiliate. He is a member of ATHEN (Access Technologists Higher Education Network) and has served on the ATHEN executive board. He has also served on the Advisory Council for the Assistive Technology for Kansans Project for many years.
 

Casey Eubank, Learning Technologies Manager - WSU Tech

Casey Eubank is the Learning Technologies Manager at WSU Tech in Wichita, Kansas. He has over 20 years of LMS management experience including: WebCT, ANGEL, Blackboard and now Canvas. He has served on the Accessibility Summer Camp (ASC) Planning Committee as the Marketing/Registration Sub-Committee Chair since the inception of the ASC conference.
 

Shelby Huddleston, Director of Distance Learning - Cowley College

Shelby Huddleston has been with Cowley College since 2017.  Transitioning from his role as Director of Instructional Technology to Director of Distance Learning in 2022, Huddleston has consistently demonstrated a profound understanding of the evolving landscape of educational technology and online pedagogy.

 

In his capacity as Director of Distance Learning, Huddleston assumes a pivotal role in guiding the instructional design processes, administrating the learning management system, and shaping the online campus component of the college. With over two decades of experience spanning across public school systems and institutions of higher learning, Huddleston brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his leadership role.

 

Dr. Rachel Rupprecht, Senior Instructional Designer - Broward College

Dr. Rupprecht supports meaningful learning experiences for students for whom quality higher education makes a real difference. She earned her Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Notre Dame and is a senior instructional designer at Broward College, where she fosters teaching and learning innovation, AI literacy, and accessibility. Her work is informed by her experience working at a variety of higher education institutions–public and private; large and small; secular and religious; liberal arts, R1, and community college–and teaching English as a Second Language to adults from the Middle East and Latin America and children in Asia and the Middle East. She serves as Communication Coordinator for the Accessibility Summer Camp at Wichita State University Campus of Applied Sciences and Technology.

What is the reality of navigating graduate school with disability? What should students expect before starting a PhD? How can educators, advisors, and institutions help? Join us as we talk with recent PhD graduate, Dr. Lina Carpenter, an Educator & Researcher at the University of California, Irvine. She will draw on her experiences as a disabled scholar to illuminate the unexpected hurdles of academia, provide perspective and strategies to help students navigate graduate school, and present university educators & administrators with insight to prevent students from “falling through the cracks."
 

About Our Guest

After obtaining two master’s degrees and a PhD, Lina has ample experience with the invisible barriers and hidden curriculum faced by marginalized community members. Building on a background in child and adolescent development, Lina’s research has delved into topics such as empathy, self-compassion, prosocial behavior, and their implications in educational settings. As an educator, Lina aims to give students tools to understand their own learning processes, pique interest in human development, and foster self-efficacy with critical thinking skills & collaboration. She currently lives in Los Angeles with her cats Coffee Bean and Chai.
